JA: A fact a day (4th July 2013)

Akbar's Harem had approximately 6000 members in total when he died...

But not everyone would account to being his women... They could be king’s wives, concubines, dancing and singing girls and slave and servant girls, mothers, stepmothers, foster-mothers, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, daughters and other female relatives of the king. Even the male children lived inside the harem till they grew up. Then, there were the ladies-in-waiting, slave and servant girls and a number of women officials and guards who were appointed by the emperor for taking care of the various needs of the harem. There were also enunches who guarded the harem and did spy work for the king.

Usually when he married a princess, the Princess would bring with her, her own servants and attendants who would also get added to the harem to serve her..

The exact number of wives that Akbar had is not known (Learned historians believe that it was a little over 30 and not 300 or 3000 as mentioned in most of the articles.)... But amongst them were three prominent wives- Empress Ruqaiya Sultan Begum, who was Akbar's first wife and principal consort, his second wife, Salima Sultan Begum, the widow of his most trusted general, Bairam Khan (He married her as a token of respect for his teacher/trainer) and Princess Hira Kunwari of Amber, who gave him a heir... She was called Mariam-uz-Zamani ("Mary of the Age") after her marriage... and later she is being referred to as Jodha Bai in modern times..

He loved all his wives equally and did not have a single favorite as such... But his first three wives did have certain priveleges compared to the other Queens

Yeah,Jodha did bring her own servants and girl companions to keep company for her... For the first time probably, the Harem got to see ladies from a differnt religion entering it... Jodha should have faced a lot of uneasiness in the beginning...

I guess he didnt even visit most women,he just married them, brought them over as a price of victory... Poor ladies, most of them must have been brought up in such royalty and being ignored like this would have hurt their ego a lot isnt it?
