Jodha Akbar - 20.August.2013

Post by ShaliniRobinson on 2013-08-20, 23:35

Poor Jalal! The chess game ended in a huge anti-climax for him.
Not only did my Ruqaiya darlin’ lost her cherished game, that fiend Jodha refused to receive my prize for the winner!! To sprinkle, nay, pour the salt on the raw, open wound!

Tch, tch! We feel bad for you, Jalal. Our condolences on the double defeat.
Well… to the credit of the king, he didn’t push her to accept the prize in the presence of the court and her vaaldain. He does it in private. Jodha must, at least, appreciate that the man honors his word and he did honor her parents. Wonder if it’s Jodha’s mistrust or … pride.
Of course, he did hurt her arm!

Too bad, it doesn’t end there. It could’ve, but Jalal wanted to make sure that Jodha accepts the winner’s prize. Hmm… think about it --- for the sake of his ego, he is forcing Jodha to accept a promise from him to have him give her anything at any point of time in her life. That’s … funny, at best. Of course, his real motive is that he wants to see what Jodha does with it; he wants to see what exactly would Jodha try to make him do.

Um… Jalal… not to counter you… I mean, with all the due respect to the ‘adab of the shah-eh-shah’ --- the lesson in not underestimating your enemy that you have given to your Ruqu darlin’ … um… may you have heeded your own advice before launching into the chess game!?

Anyhow… he’s made her take it and the deal is half done … that is, till Jodha decides to use the right for whatever reason she deems fit. The thing is Jodha sees the prize as a trick from Jalal – another insult to Jalal. She won’t use it easily – in other words, Jodha would probably use the promise card either only in the most desperate situation or she finds a situation where she can benefit someone else --- or both. At least, she would not use it for her selfish gain.

Till then… Jalal waits.

So, one game is over … and as Ruqaiya puts it, another game is afoot (or did Sherlock say that!)
~*~

Adham… okay, one feels icky typing out his name… has taken the step the man was born to take. Follow a woman right into the mouth of trouble --- such from which his mother has to rescue him. How low, Adham!
We told you to kill him when you had the chance!!

Okay… just why did Moti did not scream once in the Harem… and if not, why did she not tell Jodha?! It is a palace, for callin’ out loud! The place is literally creeping with guards of every sort.

Oh well… so Adham now having to hide in a woman’s veil moves out and moves into his mother’s skirts.
As per Ruqaiya’s knowledge of the harem ka kanoon:
·         If any man enters of his own will, that’s the last decision he’s made of his own will.
·         If any queen or slave causes him to enter, then the woman’s had it too.

So… obviously … Adham can be trusted to blame Moti for causing him to enter the Harem. He certainly isn’t man enough to own his guilt.
Ruqaiya has used the opportunity to get the slave girl punished; she knows how Adham would respond because that’s how Maaham Anga would guide him.
That’s calls for the hindi metaphor: ek teer, do nishaane. (killing two birds with one stone)

She punishes Jodha by getting her maid punished. And she proves her point to Jalal for not punishing Jodha’s nephew when he entered the harem. I wonder if she has something personal against Maaham Anga or Adham.

Of course, Jodha and Jalal fight over it. Of course, Jalal is furious and it’s unlikely he’d listen to Jodha over Maaham Anga. Of course, Jodha will be pushed to the limit.
Let’s see how Jodha gets out of this one --- a trap where she doesn’t even know she’s in.
~*~
As a side…
Before the chess game, Ruqaiya and Jodha exchanged positions to play.
During the chess game, Jodha told Ruqaiya that in her haste to corner Jodha’s shah-en-shah, she left her baadshaah unprotected. And this is how, Jodha won. Ruqaiya was so blinded by her pride in which she wants to defeat Jodha that she’s given up the privileged position of being in Jalal’s proximity, being his trusted wife.

Has Ruqaiya just done that again?

She kept the truth of Adham’s action to herself and just told Jalal enough to get him in a mad fury.
Jodha values humanity over anything else. She, as yet, thinks that Jalal punished the family and the little child. Even though, Jalal has told her that she has partial knowledge, she doesn’t know what Jalal actually did. But the fact is still a fact.
Jalal mistrusts Jodha and seeks to crush her pride. He feels that when he’s given Jodha the right to ask him whatever she would, she would ask something for a personal or Amer’s gain. Jodha might well use the promise for something she values above all else – humanity - something Jalal isn’t an alien to, and isn’t averse to.

Unknowingly, when Jodha accused Jalal of bringing injustice to a child, she told him that he’d only known taking away, and he didn’t know how to give --- Jodha’s words impacted Jalal’s heart to a point where he couldn’t sleep at night. Her words bothered her. He kept it to himself (In fact, he didn’t even tell Ruqaiya what was bothering him. He just mentions he’d gone out for air.)

Gradually, Maaham Anga’s fear and Ruqaiya’s warning are taking shape.

Jalal and Jodha would eventually see the unknown common grounds between them. Jodha might at some point discover that Jalal let the family go. Jalal at some point may see that Jodha didn’t use the prize promise not for her selfish gain.

(If Jodha uses the promise to save Moti from Jalal’s judgment, in case it goes against Moti, then she not only saves Moti, she also saves Jalal from making a judgment that Jalal would’ve regretted in future. She’d save him from making a wrong judgment and punishing a victim instead of the culprit. And this is something that Jalal would have to respect --- even if he hates her for it at the time.)

So… a triple defeat awaits Jalal? That of his heart to Jodha?

Of course, for this, they must thank the likes of Ruqaiya, Maaham Anga and yes, even Adham Khan.

Hey Shalini a very good post .

Yes its a defeat for Jalal , but he wants to capitalize it which he is unable to. Jodha does not give him that pleasure.

Jodha on the other hand has half knowledge of what happened in the darbar after she left and half knowledge is very dangerous.

But nonetheless it will be interesting to see how Jodha saves Maoti bai if she is punished by Jalal due to the twisted play of Maham Anga .

Thank you, buddy! :)

Yes, Jodha is finally getting smart. However... she is still in alien territory and the dangers are many. :)
