The Game is Afoot...

The Jilting of Jalal

... that is, if we could call it jilting.

Okay, it does feel bad when the shah-en-shah is thrown down to the floor by a wife whom he thought loved him.

Okay, she didn't mean to throw him down, but he did land on the floor owing to too much drink and raag.... erm... whatever it was that the kalaakaar sang.

Two confessions:

1 - when I saw Jodha's behavior with Jalal, for a moment it seemed so much as though she was being coy and understanding at the same time, I nearly felt she was gonna accept that she loved him. I actually (hate to admit it) wondered -- 'what if moti bai overheard Mahaam Anga read out the make-it-as-you-go part of Jodha's letter to Jalal; what-if this is Jodha's trick to trick Maaham.

But no! Thankfully! Moti has not developed the hearing capacity of spiderman.

We did have a Jodha sticking to her grounds - hum apko mitr samajhte hain. hum aapse prem nahi karte.

2. When Jalal was talking about his quivering hands, I thought it was gonna end in a confession on love. The way he went on to say his hands shivered when he married her. I thought (... hate to admit it... by now you know) no! there, Maaham's plan goes phut!

But no... he went on to talk about the time when he'd first achieved or obtained something, his hand quivered. When Jodha refused his advances, his reaction was, as prompted by Maaham, that she was shy and he proceeded to his fall... er.. the literal one.

Thankfully!

No confession as of now! *phew!* Only coz it doesn't make sense.
(and secretly coz i can't stand romance :))

*

Change is Evident but...

... it isn't love as yet - as most of us would agree.

The change is evident when Jodha sees Jalal's state and his intentions, she doesn't attribute it to 'anuchit vyahvaar' (thankfully!). She understands he has misunderstood. This shows that the trust she was talking about is real. It has taken roots. Jodha knows that Jalal would not do any such thing if he knew that Jodha has not given him permission.

In fact, in the morning, she even wonders if she worded something in the letter that may have given Jalal the impression. She is sorry about what has happened but she doesn't blame Jalal at all. She's even taken the initiative to clear up things and to apologize.

Big change, considering this is Jodha, the snail.

~

Jalal too agrees that initially she was an achievement, a trophy for him. But over time, things changed. He wanted her to understand him. He acknowledges that she is just like him in some matters.

Jalal's feelings for Jodha had begun changing much before he went to Amer for her. It has been in his thoughts. But this is something he hasn't even told Ruqaiya completely. Only Maaham has had some view into Jalal's real feelings for Jodha.

For Jalal, verbalizing this feeling, this desire before Jodha is something huge. Jalal isn't someone who talks about his feelings openly.

*

FIR... only!

The first immediate reaction in Jalal is anger. Of course!
The first immediate reaction in Jodha is confusion. Of course!

As of now, he has decided to never forgive Jodha - But - give the man time. He isn't someone who refuses to see sense just because he wants to. There have been serious matters earlier where Jodha's viewpoint was a total 180 degrees to his. Yet - once he'd had a tete-a-tete with her on it, even if he didn't agree with her, he gave her viewpoint a good chance.

Just as Jodha knows now that Jalal isn't heartless, nor evil as she once believed, Jalal also knows that Jodha is trustworthy and she is committed to him, no matter if she doesn't love him. At least, he knows that Jodha would not lie to him for something as serious as love, which he knows that she takes rather seriously.

Jodha too knows that Jalal is fair. If he says that something in her letter triggered his visit, she was willing to contemplate if something she worded could have misled him. She's already on her way to make amends - of course, Maaham has intercepted her.

The Game is Afoot

It is a fact that Jalal is the grandfather of the Sherlocks, Poirots and Hitchcocks of the coming generation. So, it is but a matter of time - rather a matter of a few solid one-on-one arguments with Jodha - when he sees that something is amiss.
(In fact, a part of me wonders if Ruqaiya may not point out that for him.  She might notice that Jodha wouldn’t do such a thing.)
Between Jalal, Jodha and the letter, there are only two people: Moti Bai and Maaham Anga.

For Jalal, neither Jodha nor Maaham can lie to him.
For Jodha, neither Jalal nor Moti can lie to her.

For Jalal, it can't be Jodha and, as per him, it can't be Badi Ammi. So... the only person left is Moti Bai… and Jodha trusts her as much as he trusts Maaham.

It's gotta be someone Jalal trusts vs. someone Jodha trusts.

Let’s see who solves the whodunit this time, and if they solve it well.
So again, two people who remain unbiased – Ruqaiya and Salema.

So Watson – once again, the game is afoot.

The Very Wicked Woman

Maaham has made some errors. Whether Jodha picks them up or counts them is up to Jodha's dimaag.

1 - she read out the letter herself.
2 - she intercepted Jodha and told her that Jalal was happy.
3 - she asked the future Tansen to sing a particular raag.

In short, she's leaving footprints - probably intentionally - to have Jodha follow her. It seems that she intends that Jodha would doubt her and - by experience - she knows that Jodha cannot keep it shut when she knows something or someone is not right.

She already has secured Jalal in the place where she wanted him - trusting her completely and angry with Jodha.

She wants to avenge Adham and to have Jodha turned out from the palace.

What she is counts on is

1- the place she holds with Jalal
2- Jalal's anger
3- Jodha's stubbornness

What she's probably not considered is

1- Jalal's unpredictability - he's already refused discussion with Maaham and gone to Ruqaiya instead; she'd noted herself that he's started using his own mind.
2- Jodha's new level of knowledge and trust in Jalal
3- Jalal's real feelings for Jodha
4- Ruqu - she is faithful to Jalal and her new friend is Jodha - and she isn't exactly naive. Ruqu has brains; and Ruqu doesn't trust Maaham as much as Jalal does.

It isn't an easy battle - and this time, Maaham looks over-confident. She is running this game with the assumptions of Jalal as she used to know him. Jalal as changed and matured now.
The conflict now is that Jalal’s and Jodha’s feelings and intentions towards each other are very different than they used to be a few months back.

*

The new villain...ess!?

Now - there is a third player in the field. Benazir.
What role she plays is yet to be seen, but it doesn't look pleasant.

At worst - she becomes Maaham's next scape goat. Unless she is turns out to be too good for Maaham - which may be difficult, considering that Jalal trusts Maaham completely.

At most, she may be the beginning of the undoing of Maaham. The first person to cause Jalal to start wondering about Maaham. Again, this is difficult to achieve for a new person around the palace.
(or unless she is the first woman Jodha gets to convert by her solo bhaashans on naari samman.)

Jalal seems to be impressed with Maaham's 'gift' for him. What he intends to do with her is yet to be seen. What Maaham intends to do with her is also yet to be seen. What this 'gift' intends to do with herself and Jalal and Maaham --- is also yet to be seen.

If Jalal thinks he can drive Jodha to jealousy --- erm... fat chance of that.
What's more likely is Jodha lecturing Jalal on what does or does not give him 'shobha' as a 'shah-en-shah'.

If Jalal tries to spend time with her instead - it'll just go to show him how he'd rather spend it with Jodha. Or how he misses the true sukoon he gets with Jodha. In short, he may come to face his true feelings for Jodha.

Ruqu --- initially, might not be bothered much. Unless, the new woman starts to gain too much of Jalal's attention.

Though for the likes of this woman - Javeda is the best punishment. Leave her with Javeda and her sevaiyaan - and this woman would be cured for life.

Nearly Noteworthy

1- They had nightgowns back then!??

2- Hmm... whatever did that man see in the cage that made him pass out with cold sweat! That looked a tad OTT. I mean, the 'soldier' had to be carried away by two others.

3- If and when the Benazir woman gets caught and sentenced - is she the new joinee in the Kaal Kothri with Adham and Shareef...??

Khoob jamegi jab mil baithenge teen dumb
Shareef, Benazir and Adham!!

1.Who said nightgowns back then?
Have you forgotten Jodha is a 22nd century woman born by mistake in the 16th century to torment Jalal.

2. Why should Jodha feel jealous of Jalal and Benazir? With the overflowing numbers in the harem. She will be preparing notes for Bhaashan no 45347563487 to explain to them the anuchithness of such paashvik ashobhaniya vyavahar.

3.The last point was fab. Kaal Kothri wouldn't remain Kaal Kothri if Benazir were to be thrown there. There would be a mad scramble to get there. Many gaddars would spring up and many crimes would take place with the sole purpose to gain entry into the Kaal Kothri. Aadham Kham may end up being so pleased that he may not want to come out and MA may not want to avenge anymore seeing her dear (chimp of a) son's sheer bliss. Shariffu may also forget his fantasies for Jodha.

4. The letter and the booze was what affected Jalal. Had it been the ...er.... raag, others too must have been affected. Had it really been the raag, wasn't it lucky for Jalal that the entire harem wasn't the audience. Had it been so, uski to band baj jaati.

My mishtake ji! Apologies. That is very true. She is - in EktaLand - born in an age which is not yet ready for her. therefore her speeches

2. Why should Jodha feel jealous of Jalal and Benazir? With the overflowing numbers in the harem. She will be preparing notes for Bhaashan no 45347563487 to explain to them the anuchithness of such paashvik ashobhaniya vyavahar.

Eggjectly! which is why i was telling Jalal not to waste his effort... there is fat chance that Jodha be jealous.

Tho as per some spoiler it seems she does realize she has some itty-bitty feelings for him.

Too true. That gotta be funny! :D

I really dunno what was the deal with the raag!! it seemed that miyaan taansen had the talent to direct the impact of his raags at specific people - as Jalal would a dagger!
Weird!! tho given the tales people tell about Tansen, this isn't exactly unthinkable.

Jilting !!! What Jilting ?? The poor man fainted/fell down in sheer relief.. once he came to know  that Madame did not expect performance from him  ... the simple fact that he had to fortify himself with 'Spirits'  makes it abundantly clear ..

I swear for a woman who never had a man before and for a woman who is not in love..it was very odd to see Jodha having a perfectly normal conversation in a Bathroom !!

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Amer Express can be stopped too , previous to this, I always had seen Amer Express  rushing to meet its agenda regardless of hail or sun .. now one word .. Jalal is happy, derails the express !!!  Why does the fact that Jalal is happy bother Jodha ??

Maham ..was sheer pleasure to watch y'day.. her stance when in front of the mirror, the growing  vanity and arrogance will be her downfall...  will be interesting to see how she will connect Jalal's passion with Adham's and get him out.. but he will be out for sure ..that is given ...

Maham..whatever toofan u are thinking of bringing..Not happening for now as Jodha's bouffant hair will act as a breaker and prevent any thunderstorm frm descending on her ..Masthishk pe aur zor daalna hoga..

Ohmigosh!! That was hilarious!! :D

And yes -- of course the vase-throwing was actually an ecstatic man's wild celebration.
