On the sets of Bobby Jasoos: Fly on the wall account by Filmfare

Some romantic interludes took place between Vidya Balan and Ali Fazal in Hyderabad, on the set of Bobby Jasoos. Filmfare gives a fly-on-the-wall account

Film: Bobby Jasoos
Director: Sameer Sheikh
Producers: Dia Mirza and Sahil Sangha of Born Free Entertainment
Cast: Vidya Balan, Ali Fazal, Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi, Arjan Bajwa
Location: Qutubshahi Tomb, Hyderabad

Ali and Vidya are amused reading a comment on producer Sahil Sangha’s mobile

The quiet area of the Qutubshahi Tomb is abuzz as people have learnt that Vidya Balan is shooting here for the film. But they have no idea that Vidya is ensconced within the walls of the tomb, romancing her onscreen lover. When producer, Sahil Sangha escorts us inside, we are left speechless by the sight of hundreds of diyas twinkling to light up the place. Vidya looks stunning in the traditional Pakistani dress – a black anarkali and aijar pants. And then there is Ali Fazal, looking super hot in the nawabi get up of kurta-pajama and sadari. Shantanu Moitra’s tunes, Swanand Kirkire’s lyrics (Tu mera afsana tu mera paimana) and Papon’s voice come together to create a romantic imagery. As soon as the choreographer, Brinda, calls for action, Vidya and Ali begin flirting with each other. The two tease and embrace each other like real lovers. Suddenly, Vidya’s dupatta gets caught under Ali’s feet and she stumbles. He quickly steadies her!

Dia and Vidya pose together during the break

Dia Mirza, a co-producer with beau Sahil Sangha jokes, “Look, Dia has lit diyas here!” We remember the first still of Bobby Jasoos, in which Vidya was seen as a beggar. But here she is in a completely opposite, seductively beautiful avatar. We are puzzled but Dia unlocks the enigma, “Vidya has many looks in the film because she’s playing a detective. The song that we are shooting right now is a dream sequence.” Even as we talk to Dia, we can’t resist stealing glimpses of Vidya and Ali, who are rehearsing the scene. Once cinematographer Vishal Singh gets ready for the shot, Dia requests everyone in Telugu to rush out of the frame. The stylist, Thea, rushes to correct Vidya’s costume, the make-up artist does a final touch-up and Vidya is lost in the shot with Ali.

Choreographer Brinda shows Vidya the moves

In between, Vidya gets hungry and asks for something to eat. Ali immediately asks someone to get chocolates but Vidya is on a restricted diet these days and so she refuses. Director Samar Shekh offers her tea or coffee. Vidya however settles for water. The shot is okayed in the eighth take and the tomb reverberates with applause. Dia gets serious as she says, “Look how much time and energy goes into a single shot. But when we watch the film, we reject it with such cruelty.”

Director Sameer Sheikh explains the scene to Vidya

Sahil asks Vidya to come out for a couple of minutes as her fans want to interact with her. We ask Ali about the secret behind his easy chemistry with Vidya. “Before coming for the shooting, we did a 10-day workshop in Mumbai. That helped a lot,” he reveals. Talking about his character, he says, “I’m playing the character of Tasavvur in the film. The track of Bobby and Tasavvur is highly entertaining.” Just then Dia mischievously informs, “After giving his first shot with Vidya, Ali called his mother and told her, ‘Mummy, I’m a star now’.” She adds, “We auditioned many boys but Ali has that ‘star’ thing about him. This is like a launch film for him.”

Vidya looks ethereal in white

It’s 7.30 pm. Worry is writ large on the faces of producers Sahil and Dia. Two shots are still to be canned and they have to leave the place by 9 pm. The location has changed. In front of a tomb flooded with light, Vidya in a red lehnga and Ali in white sherwani are complementing each other beautifully. Ali has to pick Vidya up and spin her in the air in this shot. Everyone wonders how the lean actor will manage it but after seven retakes, Vidya and Ali nail it. Vidya is so happy; she is jumping, clapping and hugging her co-actor.

Dia makes sure the scene is well lit

The next scene is even tougher, especially as there is almost no time left. Ali has to bend over Vidya and run his fingers over her face and throat and Vidya has to stop him coyly. Dia herself takes charge of a blow fan for the shot and it’s okayed in one take. We ask Vidya about the hesitation that an actress may face during such scenes and she tells us, “I did experience all that a bit initially, during the time of Parineeta. An actor’s greatest strength lies in explicitness, shamelessness and lack of hesitation. Losing your inhibitions is a must because you have to cry, laugh, fall and get up in front of a hundred people. The type of work that I’ve done in the last five-six years has been possible because I’ve become quite shameless. I’ll do what’s right for the character.”

Ali, Fazal and an assistant pose together

Brinda, a known choreographer of films in the South, is working with Vidya for the first time and is floored by her. According to Brinda, “Vidya should be awarded for her perfection, simplicity and being so down to earth. Usually, after the shot is ready, no actor comes up until we say, ‘Call the artistes.’ But Vidya is right there much before time. Shooting this song was tough because it’s not a dance number. It’s a traditional Muslim song, and we had only two days to complete it. But the pair’s dedication has made it possible.” Vidya hugs Brinda and thanks the team of Bobby Jasoos. Ali and she then leave for the hotel, while Dia and Sahil stay back to discuss the next day’s shoot with the director. We too say our goodbyes, our palate satiated with beautiful memories...
