Hooked's 100 Movies Challenge

Post by hooked on 2014-10-12, 19:04

What challenge I hear you ask?
Well, there are approximately 2 and a half months left till the end of this year. My self-given challenge is that I have to watch 100 films within this time. Since I am setting the challenge myself, you may all rest assured that there will be no cheating. Any film that I have watched earlier will not be counted among the 100.
I shall keep updating with reviews on the movies that I will be watching so you can check in from time to time to see if there are any that you fancy watching.
I have to thank Zuzana for giving me this idea by saying good things about my Haider review.
Also I thank Jenny (Cutiepie) for encouraging me and giving me the push towards taking up the challenge seriously.
So, watch this space for an avalanche of film reviews in my style!

1)

Nueve Reinas (Nine Queens) [2000]

Really liked this Argentinian film. It is a con-drama with a lot of humour. The swift pace with an extremely layered story makes for a gripping watch. As one con after another is pulled off, the world of conning people gains a different dimension altogether as the viewer is introduced to a new set of ethics and morality that guides this profession. Loved the scene where Marcos explains that the word 'crooks' doesn't describe anything since every single member of the underworld can be identified by different names based on what they do---specialisation applies here just as in any other field of work. Ricardo Darin as Marcos is sheer brilliance. Gaston Pauls as Juan was a delight to watch. And the film makes the most of that pretty face of his! And the final twist was simply epic and was not something that I expected at all!!
Glad I began with this film! Really put me in the mood for more!

O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias (The Year My Parents Went On Vacation) [2006]

This was a difficult movie to watch and also one that almost immediately drew me in from the very first scene. This Brazilian film is set in the year 1970 in a Brazil under a brutal military dictatorship. The film uses the perspective of the child protagonist Mauro to represent the terrifying reality of daily disappearences and persecution of leftists by the State and juxtaposes it with the passion and furore that the 1970 World Cup created, a tournament which Brazil went on to win. The minimal dialogues made it an interesting film to watch with a lot of the incidents being left open to the interpretation of the viewer. Just as Mauro, the central character, stumbles to his conclusions as a child suddenly forced to make sense of the harsh world which is unfamiliar and strange to him, the viewer too has to decipher the events for what they are. An added interesting thing in the film was the portrayal of the Jewish community in Brazil.

So just when you thought I'd forgotten all about this challenge, I'm back with a bunch of movies that I've watched and am going to review:

3.

Wadjda (2012)

This Saudi Arabian film about a spunky 10 year old girl's attempt to get what she wants--a bicycle, was an intensely emotional and humorous film to watch. Made by the first female film-maker in Saudi Arabia, the film gave a nuanced insight into the lives of women in a deeply patriarchal society. It ended on a positive note and I am already thinking of watching it again.

4.

Corn Island (2014)

This Georgian film was simply spectacular in terms of the visual impact of the landscape. It is about a grandfather and granddaughter's attempt to grow corn on a tiny island created by the river floods. They build a house and grow corn. However, the island is at the border between Georgia and Abkhazia and the characters get caught in the conflict between the authorities. The film really allows the viewer to become immersed in the geographical and natural characteristic of the space through the sparse use of background music and dialogue. The painstaking process of making a piece of land one's own and the inevitable futility of such a task is portrayed hauntingly in this film.

5.

Tales (2014)

This Iranian film brings together a number of stories which flow from one to another in a seamless manner. The streets of Tehran are full of stories and the film captures that powerfully. Every unfamiliar face has a story behind it. While some stories are dealt with at some length, others are encountered only in passing. Situations range from the comic to the satirical to the downright emotionally raw. Finally, while we may think the stories die unheard, we know that all stories are unearthed sooner or later.

6.

Geronimo (2014)

This French film, I did not like. The stylised portrayal of gang rivalry post-elopement of a Turkish girl with a Spanish boy belonging to rival clans had its moments of surreality. Geronimo is the central character, a modern day cool Florence Nightingale sort of a character who tries to bring order out of the chaos that the elopement of the girl creates. There were some pretty scenes such as the one shot in the middlle of a field full of kaash flowers reminiscent of Pather Panchali. However, overall, I found the movie to be too decontextualised from any real gang rivalry or working class politics and after watching films such as City of God, this one appeared quite ridiculous to be honest! Full of cultural stereotypes and cliches, this film was full of scenes that made me laugh out loud. And the worst thing is that the film completely lacked in a sense of humour. If it could laugh at itself, it would have been a saving grace for sure!

7. Pari (1995)

This Iranian film was simply stunning. Dealing with an extremely complex subject, that of the search for spiritual fulfillment and the harmony of such a search with the joy of living, this film was full of incredibly sublime moments. Niki Karimi's portrayal of the central character was hauntingly beautiful and the film stayed with me a long time after I finished watching it. I would highly recommend this film to anyone interested in spirituality or the human spirit.
