Vishwaroobam - Movie review

After half a decade(HP movies are exempted from this hiatus Wink ), I got to watch a movie... none the less, the much talked about movie, the one which was recently in the news for the so called controversies regarding hurting sentiments of a particular sector... Vishwaroobam- directed, scripted and acted by Kamal Hassan Himself...
The story is a gripping thriller, One is left to wonder what the leading protagonist actually is... Is he a middle aged Kathak dancer- who is in love with his young wife- even after he realises that his wife is not attracted to him? Is he a terrorist wanted by Indian army? Is he a jihadi who trains Al-queda terrorists? Or is he a member of RAW?

Be it a timid Kathak dancer- or the reckless Al-queda terrorist - or the intelligent Indian Spy- Kamal is at his brilliance... The movie was splashed lavishly with authentic Kamal Hassan style- be it direction or his acting..

The actions were pulsating and the scenes where the attacks on Al-queda camps by american troops and vice versa- was mind blowingly fantastic! A glimpse of Osama bin Laden-and the underlying dialogues which hints us about the politics between Al-queda, Osama Bin Laden and American stand were cleverly placed to add extra spice...

If you are planning to watch the movie and do not want to know the story, Kindly skip this para and go to the last para directly....

The movie starts with a man trying to shoo away one pigeon which flies away and the camera spans to a psycologist's room- where young Nirupama admits to getting
married to Vishwanath aka Vis, a Kathak dancer / Trainer at Newyork- it is a marraige of convenience and she is attracted to her Boss- Deepankar or shortly Deep. She says she has hired a detective to find out something about her husband Vis, so that she has a ground for divorce. As the camera spans to show us the protagonist, we get a beautifully chreographed Kathak dance... After a series of events- The detective finds out that Vis is actually a muslim- On the same day, while following Vis, the detective misses him and gets murdered by a man, who is a part of Al-Queda troop at Newyork, being mistaken for being snoopy.

A visiting card at his pocket gives away Nirupama and some men get in touch with Deep, who is actually working for the Al-Queda troop for building some device for their mission, He promptly brings them to Nirupama and Vis- who are taken away to a goddown and tortured- Omar, the person who heads the Al-queda troops at US- is sent a pic of Vis- and he recognises him to be someone else. In spite of his warning not to get into a talk with this guy and to shoot him straight- the men relent to give Vis an opportunity to pray- and by the time Omar reaches the spot, they find Vis and Nirupama have escaped after killing a whle lot of terrorists...

Omar's memory spans to the days at Afghanistan where Wisam Ahmed Kashmiri(Vis ka real name) and he were working together- training young enthusiasts. We also get a glimpse of Osama bin laden admist a beautifully shot action sequences… If I have to mention one scene which has touched my heart – A young teen who had never grown out of his childishness- who wants Wasim to push his swing – later readily agrees to become a human bomb- in a wink of an eye…

Nirupama in the meanwhile is stunned to learn the true identity of her timid Husband- his Uncle, their british friend and one of the dancer girls in Vis's Kathak group...
Vis reveals to Nirupama that he has been instrumental in executing a lot of members of the terrorist group. Then he says that his work here is to nullify the mission of the Al-Queda at US- which is tying small capsules which emits some radiation to pigeons and then enable a nigerian suicide bomber to detonate the cesium bomb finally.
The story further proceeds to show us how Vis and his troop of men diffuse the bomb detonating attempts- and finally Omar escapes the city in a plane - opening doors for Viswaroobam 2- which might happen in India :)

All in all this faced paced thriller story doesnt fail to captivate us- push us to the edge of our seats, while biting our nails. I fail to unerstand why this movie was stopped on basis of hurting sentiments- as clearly, Kamal Hassan has only pointed the activities to be done by Al-queda terrorists and not any religion in specific... We might miss a important thread of the movie, if we miss even a part of it- it is jam packed with the story... A must watch- I would give a 8 on a scale of 10...
